Jessie's Review

Throughout the Stock Market Game, I contributed to my group by distributing out who was blogging about what topic. Also, I thought of some of the stocks we ended up buying. Once we decided as a group in what we wanted to buy and short sell, I made the transactions. I also did research on companies so we could compare and choose the best one to buy. I did the math to decide how much of a stock we should buy and what we should limit the price on.

I have learned so much about the stock market over the 10 weeks we play this game. I had no clue how the stock market functioned, but now I know the general vocabulary of the stock market. Also, I learned what to look for in a stock that makes it a good or a bad one. At first I thought our group should only invest in one stock, but I learned it is good to have a diverse portfolio.

What I wished I had a better understanding about was how the website of the game actually functioned. Some of the keys on the top of the page were confusing because they all seemed the same. Also, I had no idea about short selling until the end when I finally asked a question on how to make the transaction. Also, I wish I would have had more information on mutual funds because as a group we were going choose to invest in one but we did not feel comfortable investing in one.

The game was a really fun experience because of what I learned from it. I enjoyed looking at what ranking my group was in and how much our stocks gained and fell. Within one night my group's ranking went up 109 spots and the next night it fell about the same amount. The user name and password was complicated but by the end I knew it by heart. It was fun to spend a lot of money, make investments, and take risks.

Kim's Review

What I learn from the stock market game that it can be a challenge. You can't tell if the product that you brought is going to do well. If this was a long term then you could tell if the product is going to do good. We invested in Microsoft and Apple because everyone wants a electronics. We decided that everyone in the group would be doing 2 for a week and switch to a different person for the week. It was Jessie ideas to short sell on Hersey's. I would change that we could of brought a another company not just Microsoft and Apple. Try to expande our buying and selling.

Our Portfolio for week 10

Our Portfolio

We have $99,256.62 for week 10.
We have decided to sort sell on Hersey's for 100 shares.
We place in the stock market game 371 out of 973.
Microsoft is doing well for this week, but Apple is not for this week.

Heather's Review

Over the past 10 weeks I contributed to the group by giving my group input as to what companies we should invest in. We only had invested in Apple and Microsoft for most of the Stock Market Game, but towards the end I helped her decide whether or not we should invest in Revlon and Hershey. I also helped to organize who would do what blog posts each week.

I have gained a greater sense of knowledge about the stock market and how to invest over the course of 10 weeks. I have learned the importance of investing in stocks for long and short periods of time and how to predict each one's success. I have also learned that it is important to keep a diverse portfolio when striving for low-risk investments.

I feel that throughout the Stock Market Game I have learned so much. If I were to have this experience again I would like to have a better understanding of how short selling works. There was just a little confusion as to how to go about short selling a stock at the end of the 10 weeks.

I think the game was organized very well. There is really nothing I can complain about because I have learned so much. I enjoyed being able to blog about each article and the reviews of the portfolio. I was able to learn how to use blogger.com and on wikispaces, insert graphs and other tools to use as references.

27-inch Core i5 iMac (with Core i7 option)

Apple introduced the first ever iMac to offer a quad-core processor. The new 27 inch iMacs are the first to use Intel's Core i5 and Core i7 quadcore processors. Although they were not available at the time of the announcement they are finally out and definitely worth the wait.
There are four standard iMac configurations, three of which have 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo proccessors. The forth standard configuration is a $1999 model that has the same 27 inch screen, 1 TB hard drive, and 4GB RAM as the $1699 27 inch 3.06Hz Core 2 Duo iMac but has a more powerful ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card with 512MB of GDDR3 memory and Intel's core i5 quadcore processor running at 2.66Hz. The Core i5 has 8MB of L3 cache which is shared among the processing cores.
The Core i5 has a featured technology called Turbo Boost. If an application is not using a lot of the core, the cores that are not being used will shut off, and the active ones will speed up. This allows the processor to run up to 20% faster under heavy work loads.
With the Core i5 iMac and the 2.8GHz Core i7 iMac, Apple has not just blurred the line between consumer and professional systems, but almost totally erased it. The 2.66Hz Core i5 iMac offers faster performance at most tasks than the 2.66GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro. The Core i5 iMac also has more memory and more storage while being $500 less than the 2.66GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro plus with the Core i5 iMac you get a 27 inch screen.

Sen. Nelson unveils anti-abortion amendment

An article found on Yahoo!Finance explores the issue of abortion. Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska has recently released an amendment to the Senate's health care bill that puts stringent restrictions on abortion coverage. Liberals say they will not support it because it goes beyond current laws. This issue could threaten the passage of the overall health care bill because Nelson says he won't vote for the bill without the abortion language. The amendment made public Monday bars any private insurance company that gets federal money from covering abortions. That would apply to most insurers under the new bill, since they will benefit from new government health subsidies for low-income people.

Apple-MacBook

After reviewing Apple's website, I was able to learn more about the new MacBook. The company is offering a completely redesigned, better-in-every-way MacBook, for just $999. The laptop has a built in 7-hour battery and is just 1.08 inches thin and 4.7 pounds. It also includes a brilliant LED-backlit display and glass multi-touch trackpad. By offering this new and improved computer at a more affordable price than in the past, I believe Apple will make a decent profit. Consumers are looking to buy gifts for the holidays and this will appear as a good purchase.

Review of Our Portfolio: November 23-27

We have not bought any new stocks. We hope that Microsoft and Apple continue to prosper in these rough economic times and over the holidays.

China pushes solar, wind power development

In this article, found at USAToday.com, readers learn that China is leading the world in making solar cells, the key component in solar panels, many of which are exported to the U.S.

Because of this, China is setting itself up to do more than just manufacture components for renewable energy, such as wind and solar. The country is also spending heavily to build its own domestic market as it attempts to battle its greenhouse gas emissions, electrify its nation of 1.3 billion people and curb its massive pollution problem.

Energy executives say the buildup of a huge market in China for renewable energy is luring global manufacturers and research teams to the country. That's causing concern in some corners that China, not the United States, will emerge as the hub of the new industries, leaving the United States as dependent on foreign nations for solar panels, wind turbines and other green-energy equipment and technology as it is on the Mideast for oil.

Because of China's ability to further it's knowledge of the use and benefits of solar energy, it proves how far ahead and advanced China is becoming.

iMac and the Environment

It was interesting to learn that Apple has introduced a new environmental freindly iMac, the ultimate all-in-one desktop computer, now healthy for the enviroment. This iMac includes a highly efficient power supply that reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your computer. There is no doubt this sounds extremely attractive to customers because the lower power consumption of this computer reduces energy bills and lessens the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. iMac meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it Energy Star qualification.
The greatest environmental challenge facing the computer industry is the presence of arsenic, brominated flame retardants, mercury, phthalates, and plyvinyl chloride in products. Engineers at Apple have worked hard to elimate BFRs and PVC from iMac circut boards, internal and external cables, connectors, insulators, adhesives, and more. Apple is also offering a free recycling program for old computers and displays with the purchase of any new Mac. Because of this new and improved product, Apple Inc can anticipate having an increase in value for their company.

Young Reporter Visits Microsoft to Learn About the Future of Education

It was very interesting to read about how Microsoft is getting kids involved with their future. An article found on Microsoft's website informs the public of the lengths 10 year-old reporter, Brennan LaBrie, is going to educate others of the powerful impact technology is making in the world. From over 400 kids, Brennan LaBrie was selected as one of the 12 to become a student reporter for TIME for Kids magazine. He chose to visit Microsoft's Redmond campus to learn more about the future of education, specifically how the company is helping to make learning fun and improving resources for students and teachers.
By allowing kids to visit the company and learn more about their future and the future of technology, Microsoft is really benefitting themselves. If students and teachers become more aware of the resources that Microsoft is creating and how benefical these resources would be in the class room, Microsoft's stock market value has the potential to increase significantly.

AT&T sues Verizon Wireless over 'misleading' 3G map Coverage Ads

AT&T is suing Verizon Wireless to stop its bigger mobile rival from using "misleading" coverage maps in advertisements that are causing AT&T to lose "incalcuable market share".

In October, Verizon Wireless launched an ad showing the white spots on the map were where you cannot get coverage.

AT&T argued that its costumers can use their wireless devises outside of the 3G areas, and the devises work in spots where Verizon Wireless' map says they can't.

AT&T's exclusive right to sell the Apple IPhone has helped the company gain market share from Verizon Wireless during the quarter ended in September. But since Verizon Wireless is campaigning these ads, it caused AT&T to lose market share.
Because Verizon Wireless is using white spaces on its own maps showing they have no coverage there, consumers are incorrectly interpreting the AT&T maps. They think the white spaces on the AT&T maps mean they have no coverage there at all, when they do have at least some coverage there.

Review of Our Portfolio: October 19-23

On October 19th we decided to invest in Microsoft because we knew that the new program, Microsoft 7, was coming out on the 22nd and was anticipated to be financially successul for Microsoft. We bought 900 shares at $26.82/share. On October 21st we also decided to invest in Apple with the assumption that the release of the new magic mouse would be very successful as well. We bought 200 shares at $212.23/share including a limit price at $230.00.

Magic Mouse

I was reviewing an article about Apple's new Magic Mouse, and the technology involved in the mouse astonished me. Apple used it's Multi-Touch technology which was used on the iPhone, Ipod Touch, and MacBook Pro. This touch mouse lets you interact with the mouse just using gestures. The Magic Mouse comes with every new iMac computer, but you can also add it to any Bluetooth. If you would want to buy this mouse seperatly, it would be just $69.

The Multi-Touch area covers the top of the mouse allowing you to click, scroll, and swipe through anything on your computer. Inside of the mouse, there is a small chip which tells it exactly what you want to do. The mouse will not confuse a scroll or a swipe, and it even knows when you are resting your hand on it.

The Magic Mouse uses laser tracking which is more sensitive and responsive to more surfaces than normal optical tracking. You can set this mouse down any where and use it without a mouse pad.

This mouse has a wireless and connects via Bluetooth, so there is no cords to get in the way. The Magic Mouse works from about 33 feet away. When you combine the wireless keyboard and this mouse, you create a workspace free of cords.

There is a button that is easy to access on the side, so you can conserve battery when you are not using it. The Magic Mouse manages power efficently by knowing when it is being used or not.

Review on Microsoft 7

The article I reviewed was featured on usatoday.com. It was called "Upgrades lower Microsoft profit, but results beat forecasts". The article stated that on Friday Microsoft's net income fell 18% in the last quarter because it deferred revenue when it let summertime PC buyers get free upgrades to Windows 7, which was released this week.

Investors looked past the accounting decision because if it had counted its deferred Windows revenue, Microsoft's earnings would have increased 8% from last year witht he help of big cost cuts.

The article also stated the upgrade program, which let people buy a PC with Windows Vista and later install Windows 7 for free, meant that Microsoft counted only half of its Windows sales in the period.

Because analysts now think many businesses will start buying new computers and other technology again in the middle of 2010, our group invested in Microsoft with the assumption that the new program would be successful after it was released on October 22, 2009.

USA Today Report Oct. 12-16

Could rising oil prices stunt stock rally?

On October 16, 2009, in USA Today the investors may be happy to see the stock prices hitting high this year, but there is something else is soaring that's a bit scary. It is the oil prices. The investors have strong global demands for cars and idled production facilities.

The price of a barrel of oil has jumped more than $76 for this year. It have staggering 76 percent rise in 2009. It gain the stock 20.4 percent increase this year.

The most problem is that the last time that oil was high was late 2007. The oil are going up again. Some people are wondering if rising oil prices are the potential for this market rally.

The investors wonder will rising the oil prices could affect the stocks. They would be watching to see if the oul prices jump or not.

Review of Our Portfolio: Week 1 (Oct. 12-16)

In the first week (Oct. 12-16), we still have not bought anything. We are going to invest in stocks and possibly mutual funds this week. Our starting $100,000 is now at $100,054.79 because our account is earning interest. We were thinking of ideas on what company to buy. We concluded that we were going to buy Microsoft because of Windows 7 coming out. Also we were sort of iffy about investing in Apple just because of how expensive it was. We came to the conclusion that we were going to invest in it, even though the price of the stock was so high. We figured the price would soar even more because of Christmas coming, and the lowering of the prices of their products.
